Well for as dull as yesterday must've sounded, that's about how ridiculous our night was!
We traipsed downstairs to the common room in the evening and started talking to everyone else that was there. There was a guy from San Francisco (Ben), two guys and a girl from Toronto (Ben, Julian and Michelle), a girl from Ireland (Leeanne), a girl from Cambridge (Cassie) and a guy from Australia (Tristan). With Lili and me in the mix we were all quite a group!
Around midnight everyone decided that we actually did want to go out instead of just drinking the beer at the hostel (by the way, not a fan of Asian beer). We asked David where we should go and he told us to go to Pat Pon because it would be the only neighborhood that would be open for any good period of time.
We had to take two cabs because there were so many of us. The cabs did not take us to the same place however and we ended up separated from half the group. Me, Lili, Leeanne, Cassie and American Ben got dropped off and started walking around. We went to a bar that turned out to be empty so we left before we got anything and then we went back to the main road to explore. We started at a bar called Shivas which featured a cover band that did all hip-hop music (think the Thai version of the Black Eyed Peas) which was surprisingly good. The price of drinks was not outrageous and we could dance. We were there for a little while and then we went to The Tunnel which was the club next door. It played all house music and had cameras over the bar that projected the dance floor onto the wall of the building across the street.
Eventually we decided we were done and hit up the 7-11 (they are EVERYWHERE) for some beers. The Ohio State in me came out for a minute as I worried over getting busted for open container. This is not a law in Thailand however and we wandered about just sipping our beers and taking in the sights.
Pat Pon is an interesting place. Besides the many bars that are there, there are tons of sex shows, prostitutes, lady-boys (yes, that is the PC term) and sex-tourists. We walked past a club aptly named "Super Pussy" and were approached by several "club promoters" who told us that we could go see the show for free...just buy beer. Not being in the mood to see the "Ping Pong" show they were offering we said no to all but I heard about what it was...I feel like that's good enough for me. Let's just say it involves shooting a ping pong ball out of a body part where one would not generally find a ping pong ball...
Eventually we got tired and headed back to the hostel. We grabbed some mixers and Lili and my bottle of vodka and sat out on the roof for awhile. We finally turned in quite late but it was so fun.
